I loved this book! It is a very engaging story that had me hooked from the first chapter. I love Lucy, the main character, and how we experience the world through her eyes. I love the other members of Lucy’s family and how their relationships are portrayed. This book explores some deep topics, has some light humor, romance, and excitement and mystery! I can’t wait for the next book to come out!

Lucy – I want to know more about Lucy!!

I loved this book. I don’t usually read this genre, but decided to give this one a try and I’m so glad I did. I am a “senior citizen” and I identified with Lucy, the title character. She is a “late bloomer” and totally unaware of her charm. The author does a beautiful job of describing the transition of this girl helping the reader to picture a pert little redheaded curly top leaning into a more confident young woman determined to find her place. I love her little sister Claire too. I hope she becomes a bigger part of Lucy’s story. I hope the older sister, Maggie, has someone who will help her understand her place as not only “Lucy’s big sister” but helps her navigate adolescence. I have granddaughters I know would enjoy this book and I’ll be sharing it with them.

This is Ms. VanDyke’s first book and it is so good. It can’t be her last – we need to know more about Lucy and her world.

Leaves you wondering

What a great first novel. Lucy is a girl with a special gift who emerges from a foggy life at about age 16. She discovers reality, emotion, danger, and ultimately herself. Lucy’s gift/curse is the stuff of fantasy, and though simple in concept, it makes for a great page turner. Is it all a metaphor? Is the story over or just beginning? How do we account for the law of conservation of mass?

VanDyke’s gift is in character and relationship development. She leaves enough of this unresolved to warrant the next novel—I hope it’s in the works.
